Grace
and the Prodigal Son
There's a good story in the other big book called the Prodigal Son. Maybe you have already heard it. It's the story of a man who decided that he knew better than his father about how to live, so he left home and went out into the world. He spent his entire inheritance on worldly pleasures -- wine, women, song, etc. After a time he found himself broke without food. He was so hungry that he went into a pig pen to eat what the pigs had left! It was in this sorry state, standing in the pig pen, that "he came to himself" -- he had the realization that this was no way to live. And then he remembered his father's beautiful home and all the comforts and beauty he enjoyed. He decided to return to his father's home. Thinking that his father would never agree to take him back as a son, he decided to ask to be given a job as a servant in his father's home. Anything would be preferable to the way he was living. As he was approaching, his father saw him coming and ran to greet him. He wrapped his arms around him and welcomed him back into the home as his son. He gave him a special gift and threw a big party in his honor. There was much rejoicing. This is my story. It reminds me that I've received a constant flow of grace throughout my life even when I was standing in the pig pen. |
